"Koeien (Cows) is no ordinary opera, even if the subject does not seem too sensational at first sight: cows in the pasture, a farmer and his wife. Coming from professional trickster Misha Mengelberg, an extremely Dutch setting like this irrevocably strikes a surrealistic note. But what is really unusual is how this work came about, for there was a good chance that Koeien would never have seen the light of day. At the request of ICP manager Susanna von Canon, writer and director Cherry Duyns and composer Guus Janssen rescued a unique, only half-written chapter of Dutch music history from oblivion."
